The water pool found at the base of the sandstone outcropping of El Morro was a frequent stop for travelers heading west over the past 300 years, where they often inscribed their names in the soft rock. Many of these inscriptions have become obscured with lichen growth. As part of a summer field school, graduate students were trained in conducting field trials for the eradication of the biological growth. Inscriptions were surveyed and conditions graphically annotated, with comparisons to past surveys as a means of understanding changes. Past field trials included chemically consolidating some friable surfaces.
